Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day 2022 was celebrated Thursday.

The day — part of National Engineers Week — is dedicated to encouraging young girls to consider a career in engineering.

The daughters of CJL Engineering employees in Johnstown were invited to the office Thursday morning.

They listened to female engineers speak about their jobs, built structural crafts, participated in virtual reality games, and watched videos about the field

Brenda Szelong, the Johnstown Office Manager for CJL Engineering, said they hoped the event would spark an interest in engineering.

“I think it’s very exciting because it’s been a male-dominated field,” she told 6 News.

Six school districts were represented by local students in grades three through twelve.

“It’s exciting to see the young ladies have an interest and let them know that they can do this,” Szelong continued.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women make up about half of the nation’s workforce, but only 27% of all STEM workers.
