The Project: Brainsuite
Brainsuite®, developed by Brainlab AG of Munich, Germany, is a workflow-optimized neurosurgical
Operating Room that integrates image-guided surgery, intra-operative MRI, and visualization and
data management technologies. Brainsuite integrates with multiple scanner manufacturers to
incorporate their 1.5 or 3.0 Tesla high-field MRI systems providing the neurosurgeon with interactive
patient data during the surgical procedure.
CJL Engineering Design Solutions:
CJL Engineering, together with GBBN Architects of Cincinnati, Ohio, and H&H Systems Design, New Albany, Indiana, are designing and developing Brainsuite installations in hospital locations throughout North America.
Current installations include health care facilities in:
• Dallas, Texas
• Plano, Texas
• Minneapolis, Minnesota
• Eau Claire, Wisconsin
• Richmond, Virginia
The Project: UPMC East
CJL Engineering provided Mechanical and Electrical Engineering as well as LEED design services for the new UPMC East. This 300,000 sq. ft. hospital in Monroeville, an eastern suburb of Pittsburgh, PA, will be Pittsburgh’s first hospital entirely designed to LEED standards. The healthcare complex is being designed to emphasize UPMC’s commitment to sustainable buildings and operations. The programming for UPMC East will include Emergency, Surgery, Cardiac Catherization, Laboratories, Imaging Services, Cancer Center, Endoscopy, Dining, Pharmacy and a patient capacity of 156-beds. The project also included a 149,000 sq. ft., 400-vehicle parking garage that adjoins the new hospital.
CJL Engineering Design Solutions:
• Three 750-Ton centrifugal chillers and three 750-Ton cooling towers for N+1 redundancy
• Complete Variable Air Volume HVAC System with hot water reheat and perimeter radiant
panels plus a DDC Control System
• Three 9,900 MBH high-pressure steam boilers provide steam to sterilizers, humidifiers,
converters and instantaneous hot water heaters
• Snow melting system for helipad and the connecting sidewalk
• Primary Electrical Distribution System – 4,160 volts
• Fire Protection and Fire Alarm Systems

The Project: UPMC - Hamot
CJL Engineering provided the Mechanical and Electrical engineering design for the new
Bayview Medical Office Building in Erie, PA. Situated on the UPMC - Hamot Medical
Center campus, along the shore of Lake Erie, this 70,000 sq. ft. four-story facility was
developed using a Design-Build delivery system. The process not only guaranteed a
not-to-exceed price, but expedited the construction process. This building was
designed to accommodate three additional floors for future vertical expansion.
CJL Engineering Design Solutions:
• Design-Build for maximum cost effectiveness and on-time delivery.
• Complete Variable Air Volume HVAC System with hot water reheat and perimeter radiant
panels.
• All Mechanical and Electrical infrastructure is designed to accommodate the future three
floors.
The Project: Mahoning Valley Hospital
Mahoning Valley Hospital is a not-for-profit, long term acute care hospital. The main campus is in
Boardman, Ohio. It is a new 45,000 sq. ft. facility that has 28 patient rooms, and provides patients
with extended hospital care for complex medical conditions.
CJL Engineering Design Solutions:
• A dedicated dialysis loop
• Variable Air Volume heating and air conditioning system with reheat and individual room
control
• Electrical design includes a Technology Network, lighting, power, security, as well as a
diesel powered emergency generator.
The Project: UPMC Passavant Hospital
CJL Engineering provided the Electrical Engineering Design on the expansion and renovation of
UPMC Passavant Pavilion, a community-based hospital in Pittsburgh’s North Hills. The $100 million
project involved a seven floor addition, with 170,000 sq. ft. of new construction and 30,000 sq. ft. of
renovations to the ‘E’ Wing of the existing facility. The project was engineered to achieve
LEED® Silver certification.
CJL Engineering Design Solutions:
• LEED Commissioning
• Energy Modeling
• Sustainable ‘Green Design’ Roof Garden
• Lighting Design, Site Electric and Electrical Distribution upgrade
• Electrical Design for Programming Areas (Oncology, ICU, Surgeries and Patient Room)
